PROCEDURAL READINESS and INTEGRATION in MEDICAL EDUCATION for EM

PROJECT LEAD: Wilhelmina Fouche aka ”Wilma”
CONSULTANT LEADS: Jimmy Lee & James Foley
ITERN LEAD: Marcus Jee
STUDY OUTLINE:
BACKGROUND:
In Emergency Medicine (EM), exposure to critical and essential procedures related to life and
limb is essential in ensuring both proficiency and competence amongst trainees. The Royal
College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has a published curriculum which details an
extensive list of core clinical procedures and skills which EM trainees are expected to be
competent in doing by the time they complete their training. EM in Ireland has a close
relationship with RCEM, and the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training (ICEMT)
has also adopted this curriculum. There are strict guidelines regarding the type of clinical
exposure expected as well as the exam requirements before being awarded the Certificate of
Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).There is, however, no formal number of
procedures that you are expected to complete during your training to be considered
competent, ready to practice as a consultant and supervise new trainees coming through.
Identifying barriers and enablers is essential in ensuring the quality of these graduates as
exposure to these procedures can significantly influence the quality of clinicians completing
these programs.
STUDY: A qualitative research study with a mixed-method approach will be employed and we plan to
explore and analyse the thoughts, experiences and opinions of both trainees and
consultants in Ireland based on a developed framework. This study will be reported in line with the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research.
Suitable participants will be found by requesting a list of current Emergency Medicine
trainees in Ireland from the RCSI during the period between July 2024 and July 2025.
We plan to identify possible participants for further semi-structured interviews by
requesting to volunteer at the end of the survey, the primary investigator will be able to
trace these volunteers using the coded list as discussed earlier.
Data obtained from survey responses will be analysed and reviewed by an external analyst
as provided by either ITERN/RCSI
DATA & COHORT: Approximately 140 EM trainees in Ireland.
20 EM trainee participants and 10 EM consultant participants for semi-structured interviews.
RESULTS: The results will be published in a relevant journal accessible to those who work in emergency medicine. The results will also be presented at national meetings, such as IAEM
AUTHORSHIP & COLLABORATIONS: The main Authors will be of Wilhelmina Fouche and her team. All who participate under the flag of ITERN will be given the collaborator status in the publication. These names will be indexed in pubmed when the publication is finalised.
TIMELINE: We aim to start this study in the month of March 2025. Currently, we are still in the recruitment phase, Where participants recruitment will be sent via RCSI/NEMTP.
